How to prevent shin pain when running

Short answer
Prevent shin pain by increasing running gradually, warming up, strengthening your lower legs, and allowing recovery between harder sessions.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Useful focus
- Gradual training, strength and recovery
- Do not ignore
- Focal pain, limping or pain at rest
Why shin pain can develop
Shin pain can follow repeated loading of the muscles, tendons and bone along the lower leg. A sudden increase in distance, speed, hills or training days can give these tissues less time to adapt. Hard or uneven surfaces, worn shoes and changes in running technique may add stress. Pain that is sharply focused in one small area, appears during ordinary walking, or continues at rest needs more caution because a stress fracture is a possible cause; shin pain itself does not establish that diagnosis.
Steps that may lower your risk
Start each session with easy movement and dynamic leg exercises, then build one training change at a time. Keep an easier day after demanding running, and replace a painful session with low-impact activity while symptoms settle. Check that your shoes feel supportive and are not visibly worn. Strengthen the calf, ankle and hip muscles with a clinician-approved programme, using controlled raises, balance work and gradual loading. Do not run through worsening pain or change several parts of your training at once. For background, see [Shin Pain](/symptoms/shin-pain/).
When to arrange an assessment
Stop running and arrange medical assessment if pain is severe, localised, worsening, associated with swelling, or makes you limp. Seek prompt care after a fall or direct blow, or if the foot becomes numb, weak, unusually cold or pale. Persistent pain despite rest and a sensible return to activity also deserves review. A clinician may examine your gait and lower-leg tenderness and decide whether imaging is needed to check for a stress fracture.
Questions to take to an appointment
Ask which training change may have triggered the pain, which exercises are suitable, and how to return to running without provoking symptoms. Ask whether your tenderness pattern needs testing for a [Stress Fracture](/conditions/stress-fracture/) and what signs should make you stop again.

Questions people ask
Can I keep running with mild shin pain?
Reduce or pause running if pain is increasing, changes your stride or remains after activity; use comfortable low-impact exercise while you recover.
Do new running shoes prevent shin pain?
Shoes that fit and feel supportive can help manage loading, but they do not replace gradual training, strength work and recovery.
