Can bow legs be prevented?

Short answer
Some bow-leg alignment is a normal stage of early childhood, while persistent, worsening or uneven bowing needs assessment rather than home exercises alone.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding bow-leg alignment
Bow legs, also called genu varum, describe legs that curve outward so the knees remain apart when the feet are together. Alignment changes as a child grows, and the expected pattern depends on age, symmetry and development. In adults, new or progressive bowing can alter how force travels through the knee.
Nutrition, growth conditions, previous injury and inherited alignment can all matter. Footwear or a single exercise does not reshape a growing bone. A clinician may examine walking, leg length, joint motion and overall growth before deciding whether imaging or treatment is appropriate.
Practical ways to support healthy development
Keep routine child health visits and mention limping, pain, tiredness with walking or a clear difference between the legs. Offer varied play that builds balance, coordination and general strength without forcing the knees into a position. Provide a balanced diet and follow professional advice if a nutritional concern is identified.
Do not use braces, supplements or corrective exercises without an assessment. Paediatric Physiotherapy can help when movement skills, strength or gait need support, although therapy does not replace treatment for a structural bone problem. For selected persistent deformities, an orthopaedic team may discuss Osteotomy.
When to seek care
Book a review if bowing is marked, one-sided, painful, worsening, associated with limping, or still prominent beyond the expected growth pattern. Seek prompt care after an injury with inability to bear weight, severe pain, sudden swelling or a visibly changed leg position.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the alignment fits the child’s growth stage, whether both legs are developing similarly, what signs to monitor, and whether examination, imaging or therapy is needed.
