Preseptal cellulitis treatment

The clinician first checks the eyelid, vision, eye movements, temperature, and overall condition. Oral antibiotics may suit a person who is otherwise well and can take medicine, while intravenous treatment or hospital observation may be needed for severe illness, rapid progression, difficulty taking tablets, or concern about orbital spread. The suspected source, allergies, age, and other health conditions influence the prescription.

Take the prescribed antibiotic at the instructed times and finish the course unless the prescriber changes it. Do not share medicine or use an old prescription. Keep follow-up appointments, and report an allergic reaction or troublesome side effect promptly. Gentle hygiene may help protect the skin, but home care cannot replace antibiotics when bacterial infection is suspected.

Seek emergency care for new blurred or double vision, pain or difficulty moving the eye, a bulging eye, severe headache, vomiting, confusion, or rapidly worsening swelling. Fever or general illness that is worsening despite treatment also needs immediate review.
