Preseptal cellulitis complications

A deeper orbital infection may cause pain with eye movement, restricted movement, vision changes, or a bulging eye. Infection can also spread through surrounding tissues or, rarely, enter the bloodstream and cause sepsis. These complications are not diagnosed from eyelid redness alone; examination is needed, and imaging or hospital care may be considered when deeper involvement is suspected.

Take suspected preseptal cellulitis seriously and obtain prompt assessment. Use antibiotics exactly as prescribed and attend any planned review. Tell the clinician about sinus symptoms, recent injury, bites, skin conditions, diabetes, immune problems, allergies, and medicines. Do not delay care because swelling seems limited to one eyelid.

Seek emergency care if vision becomes blurred or double, eye movement hurts or becomes difficult, the eye protrudes, swelling progresses quickly, or you develop severe headache, vomiting, confusion, faintness, shaking chills, or profound weakness. A high or persistent fever with a rapidly worsening infection is also an emergency concern.

Ask how the examination distinguishes eyelid infection from orbital infection, what response is expected, when reassessment is needed, and which symptoms mean you should go directly to hospital.
