What should you know about preparation h for sunburn?

Short answer
Preparation H is not a suitable sunburn treatment; cool the skin, moisturise gently, avoid further sun, and seek care for severe or widespread symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Avoid
- Preparation H, direct ice, blister popping, and further sun exposure
- Helpful measures
- Cooling, gentle moisturising, fluids, and loose clothing
What sunburn involves
Sunburn is an inflammatory response to ultraviolet injury. Skin may become red, hot, tender, tight, and later peel. More substantial injury can produce Skin Blisters. Preparation H is formulated for a different body area and may irritate sun-damaged skin, especially if the surface is cracked or blistered. Sun-Damaged Skin covers longer-term effects of repeated exposure.
Supportive care at home
Move out of the sun and cool the skin with a cool, damp cloth or a lukewarm shower; avoid ice directly on the skin. Apply a bland moisturiser or Emollient Therapy while the skin is still slightly damp, if it does not sting. Drink fluids, wear loose clothing, and do not burst blisters or pull peeling skin. A pharmacist can advise on appropriate pain relief. Avoid topical corticosteroids unless a clinician specifically recommends Topical Corticosteroids for your situation.
When to seek care
Seek medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, facial or eye involvement, fever, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or signs of dehydration. Get help if the skin becomes increasingly warm, swollen, or painful with spreading redness or drainage, which may indicate infection. Persistent Skin Redness or Peeling Skin also merits assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how deep the burn appears, which moisturiser is suitable, whether any medicine is appropriate for pain or inflammation, how to protect blistered skin, and when it is safe to resume outdoor activity.

Questions people ask
Can Preparation H soothe sunburn?
It is not designed for sunburn and may irritate injured skin. Use gentle cooling and moisturising instead.
Should I peel off loose sunburned skin?
No. Let it shed naturally and keep the area moisturised if comfortable; removing it can expose sensitive skin and increase irritation.
