What should you know about premenstrual irritability?

Short answer

Premenstrual irritability is recurring increased anger, impatience or emotional sensitivity before a period that eases after menstruation begins.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be happening

You might react more strongly to ordinary frustrations, feel tense, argue more easily or need more space. Poor sleep, pain, hunger and stress can amplify the response. A diary comparing mood, sleep, meals, symptoms and cycle dates can reveal whether the change is consistently premenstrual. Irritability can also accompany depression, anxiety, burnout, insomnia or low blood glucose, so a symptom that persists outside the premenstrual phase needs a broader review.

Ways to reduce strain

Protect sleep, eat regular balanced meals, plan lighter demands when possible and use movement or breathing exercises to lower tension. Tell close people that you are tracking a recurring pattern and agree on a pause if conversations escalate. Note what happens before each episode, including missed meals and sleep loss. A clinician can review the diary, medicines and contraception, and may discuss psychological support or other treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice.

When to seek care

Make an appointment if irritability harms relationships, work or self-care, feels difficult to control, or does not settle after menstruation. Seek urgent help for threats or acts of violence, thoughts of self-harm, or feeling unable to keep yourself or another person safe.

Questions for your doctor

Does the timing fit a premenstrual pattern? Could sleep, stress, meals or another condition be contributing? What support is available if anger affects my relationships? What safety plan should I use during severe episodes?
