How is a water break tested?

The team may ask when wetness began, whether it was a gush or trickle, and what the fluid looked and smelled like. They may check your temperature, pulse, contractions and the baby’s heart rate. A sterile speculum examination can allow the clinician to look for fluid near the cervix and collect a sample.

Depending on the findings, the team may use a swab-based test or other bedside assessment. A negative result does not always settle the question when leaking is very small or has stopped, so ongoing symptoms should be reported. If membranes rupture before full term, clinicians also assess for Preterm Labour.

Wear a clean pad and bring it with you if possible. Record the time, colour and amount of fluid, and note contractions, pain, fever or changes in baby movements. Avoid tampons, sex and vaginal products until your maternity team advises otherwise. Do not insert a finger to check the fluid.

Contact maternity care promptly if you suspect fluid leakage. Go urgently for green or brown fluid, bleeding, fever, severe pain, reduced movements, regular contractions or a strong urge to push. Emergency help is needed for collapse, severe breathing difficulty or heavy bleeding.
