What should you know about pregnancy growth scan 28 weeks?

The sonographer measures parts of the baby to estimate growth and reviews movement, heartbeat, position and the amount of amniotic fluid. The placenta and blood flow may also be assessed, particularly when there are concerns about growth, blood pressure, bleeding, diabetes, previous pregnancy complications or multiple pregnancy. An estimate is not the same as a direct weighing, and a single scan is interpreted alongside your dates, examination and earlier scans. The baby may not be in a position that allows every view.

Follow the instructions from your maternity service; many later-pregnancy scans do not require a full bladder. Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen and bring your appointment details and questions. The scan usually involves gel on the skin and a handheld probe. Ask when the report will be discussed. If measurements are outside the expected pattern, your team may suggest another scan, blood-flow assessment or closer antenatal monitoring.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for reduced or changed fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, severe headache, vision changes or sudden swelling. These symptoms need assessment even when a scan is already booked. Keep the scan appointment unless your maternity team gives different instructions.
