Pregnancy and Sunburn: What to Know

Short answer
Sunburn during pregnancy is treated with cooling, fluids, gentle skin care, and sun avoidance, while severe blistering, dehydration, or illness needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First steps
- Cool the skin, drink fluids, and move out of the sun

- Severe blisters, dehydration, confusion, or infection signs
What sunburn does to skin
Sunburn is an inflammatory reaction after ultraviolet exposure. Skin may become hot, tender, red, tight, and swollen; peeling can follow as the damaged surface sheds. Pregnancy does not make ordinary sunburn a direct infection, but overheating, fluid loss, and discomfort can be harder to tolerate.
Use [Sunburn](/conditions/sunburn/) for a broader overview. Persistent colour and texture changes from repeated exposure are discussed under [Sun-Damaged Skin](/conditions/photoaging/). A sunburn that forms fluid-filled lesions is more serious than mild redness alone; [Skin Blisters](/symptoms/skin-blisters/) can help you recognise that symptom.
What you can do now
Move indoors or into shade, take a cool shower or apply cool damp cloths, and drink fluids regularly. Pat skin dry, apply a bland moisturiser to intact skin, and wear loose clothing. Do not pop blisters, peel loose skin, use ice directly, or scrub the area. [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) may be discussed for dryness.
Avoid further ultraviolet exposure while the skin heals, including tanning devices. Check any pain medicine, cream, or spray with your maternity clinician or pharmacist before use. Do not apply topical corticosteroids without advice; [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) may be appropriate for selected inflammatory conditions but are not a self-directed sunburn cure.
When to seek urgent care
Seek prompt medical care for extensive blistering, severe swelling, faintness, confusion, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, very little urine, fever with feeling unwell, or signs of infection such as worsening pain, pus, or spreading redness. [Skin Redness](/symptoms/skin-redness/) and [Peeling Skin](/symptoms/skin-peeling/) can occur during recovery, but worsening symptoms deserve review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which moisturiser and pain-relief options fit your pregnancy, how to protect blistered skin, and whether the burn needs examination. Mention the exposed area, timing, and any dizziness, fever, or reduced urination.

Questions people ask

A small uncomplicated burn usually causes local skin inflammation, but overheating and dehydration can make you unwell and should be addressed.
Can I use any sunburn cream while pregnant?
Check the ingredients with a maternity clinician or pharmacist before applying medicated products, especially over large areas or broken skin.
