Pregnancy after PPROM: what to know

PPROM means the membranes around the baby ruptured before labour and before the pregnancy reached term. The reason may not be clear, and a previous episode does not make the same outcome certain in a later pregnancy.

Your maternity team may review when the waters broke, whether infection or bleeding occurred, how the pregnancy ended, and any cervical or uterine concerns. This history helps shape appointments and the plan for checking your wellbeing and the pregnancy.

Arrange a pre-pregnancy appointment if possible. Bring discharge information, ask whether medicines or health conditions need review, and contact maternity services promptly after a positive test. Keep a clear record of any fluid leakage, bleeding, pain or fever.

Depending on the pregnancy and gestation, the team may discuss an Antenatal Steroid Injection to support fetal lung maturity when early birth is a concern. If delivery is recommended, Induction of Labour may be one option explained alongside other birth plans.

In pregnancy, contact maternity triage urgently for a gush or continuous trickle of fluid, vaginal bleeding, regular contractions, fever, abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement when movements are established. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe.
