Preeclampsia without severe features: what to know

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related condition involving raised blood pressure and signs that the body may be under strain, often identified through urine or blood tests. Without severe features means the current assessment has not shown certain serious warning findings. It does not mean the condition can be ignored, and it may occur without obvious symptoms.

Care commonly includes repeated blood-pressure checks, symptom review, urine or blood testing, and checks on the baby's growth and wellbeing. The plan depends on pregnancy stage, results, and how you and the baby are doing.

Keep every planned antenatal appointment and follow the instructions for home blood-pressure checks if you have been given them. Record readings and symptoms so your maternity team can see changes. Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed, and do not start or stop a medicine without discussing it with the prescriber.

Your team may discuss continued observation, timing of birth, induction, or Caesarean Section if the balance of risks changes. Contact your maternity service urgently for a severe or persistent headache, visual changes, pain under the ribs or in the upper abdomen, sudden breathing difficulty, chest pain, marked swelling of the face or hands, vaginal bleeding, or reduced fetal movement. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these occur. If you feel seriously unwell, seek emergency care.

Ask which readings or symptoms should trigger a call, how often your blood and urine will be checked, how the baby's growth will be assessed, and what findings would change the birth plan.
