Preeclampsia and tiredness

Short answer
Tiredness alone does not diagnose preeclampsia, but unusual fatigue with headache, swelling or breathlessness should be medically assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Tiredness alone
- It is common in pregnancy and does not establish a diagnosis.
- More concerning pattern
- Fatigue with headache, vision changes, swelling or breathlessness needs review.
Why tiredness needs context
Pregnancy, poor sleep, emotional strain, anaemia, infection and thyroid problems can all leave you tired. Preeclampsia may have no clear symptoms, but when fatigue is new, overwhelming or paired with a persistent headache, visual changes, upper-abdominal pain, sudden swelling or breathlessness, it warrants a blood-pressure check.
A clinician may review your symptoms, blood pressure, urine and blood tests. These checks can help distinguish preeclampsia from other causes and identify whether organs such as the kidneys or liver need attention. Do not use tiredness by itself to decide that you have or do not have the condition.
Useful next steps
Write down when the fatigue started, how it affects ordinary activities, and any associated symptoms. Keep antenatal appointments and ask for assessment if the change is significant or persistent. Eat and drink regularly as advised, rest safely, and do not stop prescribed medicine. An Antenatal Care Package can provide scheduled checks and a route to advice.
When to get help quickly
Contact your maternity team promptly if tiredness comes with a severe headache, blurred or flashing vision, pain under the ribs, sudden swelling, repeated vomiting or reduced urine. Seek emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, seizure, confusion or inability to stay awake. Tell the service you are pregnant and list every symptom.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether you need blood-pressure, urine or blood testing, including an assessment for anaemia. Ask which changes should prompt urgent care, how to track symptoms, and when to repeat the review if results are reassuring but fatigue continues.

Questions people ask
Is tiredness a sign of preeclampsia?
It can occur with many pregnancy and health issues, so it is more useful when considered with other symptoms and checks.
Should I ask for an anaemia test?
Ask your clinician whether anaemia or another cause could explain persistent fatigue and whether testing is appropriate.
