Preeclampsia and swelling hands

Mild swelling may be related to normal fluid changes, heat, activity or the position of your hands. Preeclampsia commonly presents with high blood pressure and may have no obvious symptoms, but sudden swelling of the hands or face can be a warning sign, especially when rings become tight quickly.

A clinician will consider the pattern and speed of swelling alongside headache, visual changes, pain under the ribs, nausea, breathlessness and your blood-pressure reading. A urine sample and blood tests may be needed; hand swelling alone cannot confirm the condition.

Remove tight rings before swelling increases and note when the change began. Arrange a blood-pressure check if the swelling is new, sudden or increasing. Do not take water tablets or change prescribed medicines without medical advice. Keep scheduled antenatal visits, where blood pressure and urine can be reviewed as part of an Antenatal Care Package.

Get prompt medical advice for hand swelling accompanied by a persistent headache, blurred or flashing vision, upper-abdominal pain, vomiting, sudden facial swelling or feeling very unwell. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, collapse, seizure or confusion. Mention how quickly the swelling appeared and whether it followed a blood-pressure reading.

Ask what blood-pressure result would change your plan, whether you need urine or blood tests, how to monitor swelling at home, and which symptoms mean you should go straight to hospital. Ask whether your medicines, work pattern or heat exposure could be contributing.
