Preeclampsia: what is it?

Preeclampsia can affect the kidneys, liver, brain, or placenta. Some people feel well, while others develop headache, vision changes, swelling, upper-abdominal pain, or nausea. A diagnosis is based on clinical assessment, which may include repeated blood pressure readings, urine checks, blood tests, and monitoring of the baby. It is different from ordinary pregnancy discomfort.

Keep antenatal appointments and take prescribed medicines exactly as directed. Record symptoms and ask how to check blood pressure if home monitoring is advised. Do not stop medication because a reading improves or because you feel better. Your care team may discuss observation, hospital review, timing of birth, and follow-up after delivery.

Seek urgent maternity advice for a severe headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, strong pain under the ribs, sudden breathing difficulty, confusion, a seizure, or noticeably less fetal movement. A warning sign deserves assessment even if a previous appointment was reassuring.

Ask what your readings mean, which symptoms should prompt hospital attendance, how the baby will be monitored, and how treatment could affect plans for birth. Clarify who to call outside clinic hours.
