What should you know about preeclampsia after labor?

Labour ending does not immediately end the possibility of pre-eclampsia. Blood pressure can remain high or rise during postpartum recovery, and symptoms may be mistaken for dehydration, tiredness, or normal discomfort. Watch for a headache that persists, changes in vision, pain under the ribs, sudden swelling, nausea, or difficulty breathing. A symptom alone cannot identify pre-eclampsia, so assessment should include blood-pressure checks and a clinical review.

Call your maternity service or doctor when symptoms begin, especially if you have had high blood pressure in pregnancy. Follow the medicine plan you were given and keep appointments even if you feel better. Note readings, symptoms, and the time medicines were taken. The healthcare team may repeat measurements and test urine or blood to assess possible effects on the kidneys, liver, blood, or other organs.

Get emergency help for a seizure, severe headache with visual disturbance, chest pain, serious breathing difficulty, confusion, or collapse. Seek same-day medical care for a new persistent headache, sudden swelling, upper-abdominal pain, vomiting, or a raised blood-pressure reading. Arrange help with the baby and transport if symptoms make you weak or unsafe to travel alone.

Ask what your target blood pressure is, how often to monitor it, and when to call urgently. Discuss the expected duration of treatment, breastfeeding considerations, warning symptoms to watch for overnight, and the plan for future pregnancy care.
