What should you know about preeclampsia 6 weeks postpartum?

Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy-related blood pressure condition, but it can first appear or continue after delivery. At six weeks postpartum, a severe headache, vision change, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling, breathlessness, nausea, or feeling unusually unwell should not be dismissed as ordinary recovery. A breast or chest symptom is not the defining feature of this condition; the concern is the blood pressure and its effects on organs.

Contact your maternity team, doctor, or urgent medical service if you have concerning symptoms or a high blood-pressure reading. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and bring a list of medicines, recent readings, and symptom details. Assessment may include repeated blood-pressure checks, urine testing, and blood tests. Do not stop treatment because you have delivered or because one reading later improves.

Seek emergency help for a severe or persistent headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, chest pain, difficulty breathing, confusion, a seizure, or severe upper-abdominal pain. Arrange same-day assessment for a new headache, marked swelling, vomiting, or a blood-pressure concern after birth, including around six weeks postpartum. If you feel faint or unsafe to travel, ask someone to stay with you and call emergency services.
