Pre-labour contractions vs Braxton Hicks

Short answer
Braxton Hicks contractions are usually irregular and may ease with rest, while labour contractions become more regular, stronger and closer together.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Braxton Hicks
- Often irregular and may settle with rest or a position change.
- Labour pattern
- Usually becomes more regular, intense and close together.
How the patterns differ
Braxton Hicks contractions can feel like tightening across the abdomen. They often vary in length and spacing, do not build steadily, and may settle after changing position, resting or drinking fluids. They can still feel uncomfortable.
Established labour tends to create a pattern: contractions keep coming, become harder to talk through, and continue despite rest or movement. The cervix changes during labour, but only an examination can assess that. Contractions before the expected stage of pregnancy may indicate preterm labour and need assessment.
What you can do
Time contractions from the start of one to the start of the next and note how long each lasts. Rest, change position, drink fluids and use the comfort measures recommended by your maternity team. Keep your hospital contact details available. Do not rely on contraction timing alone if fluid leaks, bleeding or reduced fetal movement occurs.
When to call
Contact maternity care urgently for regular painful contractions before term, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, severe constant abdominal pain or reduced fetal movement. Call promptly if contractions are becoming stronger and closer together or you are unsure whether labour has begun.
Questions for your doctor
Ask when your team wants you to call, how to time contractions, and which pain or fluid changes matter. If contractions occur early, ask how preterm labour will be assessed and what monitoring is available.

Questions people ask
Can Braxton Hicks be painful?
Yes. Practice contractions can be uncomfortable, even when they do not develop into established labour.
Can I tell for certain at home?
No. A changing contraction pattern can offer clues, but an examination may be needed, especially if contractions start early.
