Pre-eclampsia after birth: what to know

Delivery removes the pregnancy but does not make blood pressure concerns disappear immediately. Post-birth pre-eclampsia may cause headache, visual symptoms, pain beneath the ribs, nausea, vomiting, swelling, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, or feeling suddenly unwell. A typical tired feeling after birth should not be used to explain away severe or unusual symptoms.

Your team may check blood pressure, urine, blood tests, symptoms, and how you are recovering. Tell every clinician that you recently gave birth, even if pregnancy blood-pressure checks were reassuring.

Take blood-pressure medicine exactly as prescribed and attend the review arranged by your maternity team. Keep a written list of symptoms and readings if you have been asked to monitor at home. Ask another adult to help with the baby while you seek care, and check before taking non-prescribed medicines or supplements.

Mention breastfeeding when medicines are reviewed; clinicians can choose a suitable plan and explain how to take it. Ask who can assess you overnight, because post-birth warning symptoms should not wait for a daytime appointment.

Call emergency services or attend emergency care for a severe headache, loss or marked blurring of vision, severe pain under the ribs, trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, seizure, heavy bleeding, or rapidly worsening swelling. These symptoms need immediate assessment after birth.

Ask what blood-pressure result should trigger a call, when your next review is due, how long medicine may be needed, and which symptoms suggest a seizure or other serious complication. Ask whether your treatment is suitable for breastfeeding and how a future pregnancy would be monitored.
