Pre-eclampsia pain on the right side: what to know

Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy condition linked with high blood pressure and possible effects on organs. Pain in the upper right abdomen, near the ribs, can occur when the liver area is affected. A right-sided ache can also have other explanations, such as muscle strain, indigestion, or pressure from the growing baby, so the symptom alone cannot diagnose pre-eclampsia.

Clinicians may check your blood pressure, urine, blood tests, symptoms, and the baby's wellbeing. A normal reading at one moment does not replace assessment if pain persists or new symptoms appear.

Contact your maternity team or an urgent pregnancy service today and describe the exact location, onset, severity, and whether the pain is constant. Mention any headache, flashing lights, breathlessness, vomiting, sudden swelling, or reduced fetal movement. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or unwell. Take only medicines that your maternity clinician has advised.

Regular antenatal visits help monitor blood pressure and urine changes before complications develop. Your team may arrange closer checks or discuss delivery planning if findings suggest that continuing the pregnancy is unsafe.

Seek emergency help immediately for severe or worsening upper abdominal pain, a severe headache, vision loss or marked blurring, trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, heavy bleeding, a seizure, or noticeably reduced fetal movement. These warning signs require urgent assessment rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Ask: Could this pain be related to my blood pressure or liver? Which symptoms mean I should return straight away? How often should my blood pressure and urine be checked? What monitoring is planned for my baby? If delivery becomes advisable, could induction or caesarean birth be considered?
