PPROM at 19 weeks: what to know

The fluid may leak suddenly or slowly, and the amount can vary. Discharge and urine can look similar, so diagnosis should be made by a maternity professional. Assessment may include your history, temperature and pulse, an examination, and an ultrasound. The team will watch for infection, bleeding, contractions, and changes in the pregnancy. At 19 weeks, counselling often covers the possible effects of reduced fluid, the chance of the situation changing, and the benefits and burdens of different care plans.

Call your obstetric team or attend the designated emergency service. Use a pad to observe fluid and avoid sex, tampons, swimming, or vaginal products until examined. Bring your medicines and pregnancy information. Your clinicians may recommend observation and follow-up, prescribe treatment for a specific concern, or discuss ending the pregnancy if infection or other danger develops. An antenatal steroid injection is a later-pregnancy treatment decision, not something to start without specialist advice.

Attend urgently for fever, shaking, worsening abdominal or back pain, regular cramps, bleeding, green or bad-smelling fluid, weakness, or faintness. These symptoms can signal infection, labour, or bleeding. If you are already being observed at home, follow the exact return instructions from your maternity team.
