Short answer

Panic attacks can occur with postpartum depression, causing sudden intense fear and physical symptoms that deserve compassionate assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Safety
New severe chest or breathing symptoms need urgent assessment.

Understanding panic after birth

A panic attack may bring a rapid heartbeat, shaking, sweating, breathlessness, dizziness, chest tightness, nausea, or a feeling of losing control. It can arrive suddenly and leave you worried about another episode. Panic attacks may accompany postnatal depression or anxiety, but similar physical symptoms can also have medical causes.

Low mood after birth, loss of pleasure, guilt, exhaustion, intrusive fears, or difficulty bonding may provide important context. A clinician can ask about the episodes, examine relevant symptoms, and decide whether medical checks or mental health treatment are needed.

During and between episodes

If an episode begins, sit somewhere safe, loosen tight clothing, and breathe slowly without forcing deep breaths. Remind yourself that the sensations are frightening but temporary, while still seeking assessment for new or severe physical symptoms. Between episodes, reduce avoidable demands, accept practical help, record triggers, and arrange an appointment with a doctor or mental health professional.

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help for chest pain that is severe or unfamiliar, fainting, serious breathing difficulty, weakness on one side, or symptoms that do not settle. Seek emergency mental health help if you may harm yourself or your baby, cannot stay safe, or experience hallucinations, severe confusion, or extreme agitation. Contact local emergency services or attend an emergency department.

Questions for your doctor

Could these episodes be panic attacks or a physical problem? What treatment can reduce panic and low mood? What should I do if an episode happens while I am alone with my baby?
