Short answer

Postpartum depression can affect mood, sleep, energy, concentration and confidence after birth, and support from a clinician can help.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What postpartum depression can feel like

Depression after delivery may involve persistent sadness, emptiness, guilt, hopelessness or loss of interest in things that previously mattered. Some people feel emotionally numb rather than tearful. Irritability, feeling anxious, fatigue, daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating or difficulty sleeping may also occur. A newborn’s needs, physical recovery and broken sleep can make symptoms harder to recognise, but feeling overwhelmed is not a personal failure.

Postpartum depression is a condition, not a verdict on your ability to parent. Symptoms can begin soon after birth or develop later, and their intensity can change. A clinician can also consider physical contributors and your sleep, medicines, feeding plans and support at home.

Practical next steps

Arrange a confidential appointment with your obstetrician, midwife, family doctor or mental-health professional. Describe when symptoms began, how often they occur and how they affect eating, sleep, bonding and daily tasks. Ask someone you trust to help with the baby, meals or transport while you attend. Keep regular food, fluids and rest where possible, and accept practical help without waiting until you feel unable to cope.

Treatment may include talking therapy, medication, or both, selected around breastfeeding and your medical history. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without guidance. Depression may coexist with insomnia, so mention nights when you cannot sleep even when the baby is settled.

When to seek urgent help

Seek urgent help now if you think about harming yourself or the baby, feel unable to keep either of you safe, hear or see things others do not, or feel unusually confused, agitated or detached from reality. Contact local emergency services or go to an emergency department, and ask another adult to stay with you. Without those warning signs, arrange prompt clinical care when low mood, anxiety or exhaustion is persistent or interferes with caring for yourself or your baby.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could these symptoms be postpartum depression? What support is available today? Which treatments fit my feeding plan and medical history? What should my family watch for, and who should we contact if symptoms suddenly worsen?

Questions people ask

Can postpartum depression start after the first weeks?

Yes. Symptoms can begin later after birth, so new or worsening changes in mood, sleep, anxiety or functioning deserve assessment.

Does asking for help mean I am a bad parent?

No. Depression is a health condition, and seeking support is a practical step that can protect your wellbeing and your baby’s care.
