What should you know about a postnatal depression survey?

Survey questions may cover sadness, anxiety, enjoyment, confidence, sleep, guilt, concentration and thoughts of self-harm. They provide a snapshot of your reported experience, not a judgment about parenting. Results need to be interpreted alongside your health history, recovery after delivery, medicines, support network and ability to manage daily tasks.

A survey cannot by itself confirm postnatal depression or explain why symptoms are present. You can still need help when your answers do not capture the full picture.

Complete it in a calm, private setting and ask for clarification if a question is unclear. Describe symptoms that are missing, such as frightening intrusive thoughts, anger, numbness or difficulty bonding. Save the result or discuss it with your doctor rather than interpreting it alone.
