What should you know about post strep throat rash?

Strep throat can be associated with a fine, rough-textured rash, particularly on the trunk and skin folds. The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. A rash may also reflect a medicine reaction, a separate viral illness, or another skin problem. Note when it began, where it appeared, whether it itches, and whether sore throat, swollen glands or fever are continuing. Tonsillitis can cause similar throat symptoms but does not explain every rash.

Contact a GP for an examination, especially if the diagnosis of strep throat was not confirmed or the rash appeared after starting medicine. Continue prescribed antibiotic treatment exactly as directed unless a clinician tells you to stop; report hives, facial swelling, wheezing or rapidly worsening symptoms immediately. Keep cool, use gentle unscented products, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels, cups or utensils while throat infection symptoms remain.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling of the lips or tongue, blistering or peeling skin, a rash involving the eyes or mouth, marked drowsiness, or a rapidly spreading rash. Arrange prompt review when fever returns, throat pain worsens, urine becomes unusually dark, or joint swelling develops after the throat illness.
