What should you know about post pregnancy compression garments?

Short answer
After pregnancy, compression garments may ease heaviness or swelling for some people, but they should fit comfortably and be used only after a clinician considers your symptoms and delivery recovery.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible benefit
- Support for heaviness or selected swelling
- Before use
- Check the cause of new or unusual swelling
- Stop and seek advice
- Pain, numbness, colour change, or sudden worsening
What compression can and cannot do
Pregnancy and the weeks after birth can bring fluid-related swelling, aching legs, pelvic pressure, or abdominal tenderness. A garment may provide support and help some swelling feel more manageable, but it does not diagnose or treat every cause. New swelling in one leg, severe headache, vision change, or high blood pressure symptoms need medical assessment rather than self-treatment with compression.
Choosing and wearing a garment
Ask your maternity team which style is suitable after vaginal birth or caesarean birth, especially if you have an incision, wound, or pelvic discomfort. Choose a measured fit that allows normal breathing and movement. Put it on smoothly, check the skin and circulation, and remove it if it causes pain, numbness, tingling, or colour change. Keep garments clean and stop for review if swelling changes suddenly.
When to seek urgent advice
Seek urgent medical advice for sudden one-sided leg swelling, warmth, redness, or pain; chest pain; severe breathlessness; fainting; or coughing blood. Contact your maternity team for heavy bleeding, fever, worsening abdominal or wound pain, severe headache, visual symptoms, or swelling of the face and hands. These signs require clinical assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether compression is appropriate for your swelling, which body area to cover, when to wear it, and how to manage it around feeding, sleep, exercise, or a caesarean wound. Ask how to recognise a fit problem and when swelling should be reassessed.
Questions people ask
Can I wear compression after a caesarean birth?
Possibly, but the garment must not interfere with the wound; ask your maternity or surgical team about timing and fit.
Is all swelling after pregnancy suitable for compression?
No. Sudden or one-sided swelling and swelling with breathlessness or chest pain needs urgent assessment first.
