Short answer

Post-partum depression can affect men after a baby arrives, causing persistent low mood, irritability, withdrawal, or exhaustion that needs support and clinical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible signs
Irritability, withdrawal, worry, exhaustion, sleep or concentration changes
Who can help
Primary care, mental-health services, a partner, or trusted relative
Emergency concern
Risk of harm to self, baby, partner, or others

How it may appear in men

A father or male partner may feel sad or numb, but depression can also show as anger, impatience, constant worry, work overinvolvement, social withdrawal, or using alcohol to cope. Difficulty concentrating, fatigue, daytime sleepiness, and insomnia may make ordinary tasks feel unmanageable. He may feel pressure to provide, uncertainty about caring for the baby, conflict with a partner, or distress about changed routines.

These signs do not prove that depression is present; sleep loss, anxiety, relationship strain, substance use, and other medical problems can look similar. A clinician can ask about mood, behaviour, sleep, safety, and functioning without treating gender or parenthood as a diagnosis.

How to take action

Choose a calm moment to tell someone you trust what has changed, using specific examples such as missed work, frequent anger, or inability to rest. Book an appointment with a primary-care clinician or mental-health professional. Partners and relatives can offer childcare, food, transport, or company, but should not carry responsibility for treatment alone.

Keep a simple routine: wake at a consistent time, eat regularly, limit alcohol and non-prescribed drugs, and accept brief periods of rest. Talking therapy, practical family support, and medicine may all be considered after assessment. A father can seek care even if the mother is also receiving help.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency help for suicidal thoughts, threats of violence, inability to stay safe, severe confusion, or hearing or seeing things others do not. Move away from situations where someone could be harmed, ask a trusted adult to help with the baby, and contact local emergency services or attend the nearest emergency department. Escalating alcohol or drug use with unsafe behaviour also warrants prompt help.

Questions for an appointment

Could these changes be depression, anxiety, sleep deprivation, substance-related, or medical? What treatment can fit my work and family responsibilities? How can my partner be involved, and what is the plan if anger or hopelessness suddenly worsens?
