How the structures involved in Depression differ from normal

Short answer

Post-op depression is a period of low mood, anxiety, loss of interest, or reduced functioning after surgery that needs assessment rather than being dismissed as part of recovery.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why mood can change after an operation

Pain, anaesthetic effects, limited movement, disrupted sleep, loss of independence, and worry about the result can all weigh on recovery. Depression may look like persistent sadness, emotional numbness, irritability, fatigue, poor concentration, or withdrawing from people. Recovery discomfort alone does not explain every mood change. A clinician may also check medicines, infection, anaemia, thyroid problems, and other physical causes that can affect energy or thinking.

Supporting recovery

Tell the surgical team or GP when the change began and how it affects eating, washing, walking, sleep, and rehabilitation exercises. Follow pain and wound-care instructions, but report uncontrolled pain or new physical symptoms rather than silently coping. Ask family for concrete help with meals, transport, and household tasks. Short, achievable routines, daylight, gentle movement approved by your surgical team, and regular contact can support recovery while assessment is arranged.

When to get help urgently

Contact your surgical team promptly if low mood or anxiety is worsening, stopping rehabilitation, or making self-care difficult. Seek emergency help for suicidal thoughts, thoughts of harming another person, severe confusion, hallucinations, chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or sudden physical deterioration. Keep medication lists and discharge information available when seeking care.

Questions for your doctor

Could my symptoms be related to pain, medicines, or another physical problem? What mental-health support is available during recovery? Which activity is safe now? How should sleep and pain be managed? Who reviews me if my mood deteriorates?

Questions people ask

Is low mood after surgery always depression?

No. Several recovery factors can affect mood, but persistent or disruptive symptoms should be assessed.

Can pain contribute to post-op depression?

Pain and poor sleep can make mood and functioning harder, so both should be discussed with the care team.
