Post-nasal drip and sore throat

Mucus from the nose or sinuses may drain down the back of the throat. The fluid can irritate the lining, and repeated coughing or throat clearing can add friction. Allergic rhinitis and a common cold may cause this pattern, sometimes with congestion, hoarseness, or a sensation of something stuck in the throat.

A sore throat can also be caused by viral illnesses such as influenza or COVID-19, or by conditions such as acid reflux. Strep throat, tonsillitis, or glandular fever may need clinical assessment, especially when swallowing is very painful or fever and swollen glands occur.

Sip water regularly and try warm fluids or a throat lozenge if suitable for you. Saline nasal spray may reduce thick drainage; use sterile, distilled, or boiled and cooled water for a nasal rinse and follow the instructions. Avoid smoking and vaping, and limit repeated forceful throat clearing by sipping water instead.

A pharmacist can advise on pain relief or an allergy treatment after checking your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions, and current medicines. Antibiotics do not treat most viral sore throats, so an examination may be needed before they are considered.

Get urgent help if you cannot breathe, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, have rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, or develop confusion. Seek prompt advice for severe one-sided throat pain, difficulty opening the mouth, dehydration, or a rapidly worsening illness.

Arrange a review if the sore throat keeps returning, does not settle, or is accompanied by persistent hoarseness, a neck lump, or unexplained weight change. The clinician can examine your throat and decide whether testing for infection or assessment of reflux and nasal disease is needed.

Ask whether your throat findings fit irritation from drainage, whether you need a swab or other test, and which nasal or pain treatment is suitable. Tell the clinician about fever, cough, exposure to illness, reflux, allergies, and trouble swallowing.
