Post-menstrual spotting: what to know

Light blood after a period can occur when hormone levels shift, the cervix is irritated, or vaginal tissue is dry. Other possible causes include chlamydia, cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, endometrial polyps, uterine fibroids, and womb cancer. A symptom does not show which condition is responsible, so the pattern and your stage of life matter.

Tell a clinician whether the blood is pink, brown, or red; how long it lasts; whether it follows sex; and whether you have pelvic pain, discharge, fever, or bleeding after menopause. They may recommend an examination or tests based on those details.

Keep a simple record of bleeding, including when it starts, how much protection you need, and any possible trigger. Arrange a routine appointment if spotting repeats, appears after sex, or is new for you. Bring a list of medicines and contraception, and mention pregnancy possibility if relevant.

Avoid guessing the cause from colour alone. Do not use leftover antibiotics or hormonal medicines without clinical advice, because treatment depends on the source of bleeding.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, faintness, marked weakness, fever, or a bad-smelling discharge. If you have finished menopause, arrange prompt assessment for any vaginal bleeding, even if it is only spotting or happens once.

Ask whether you need a pelvic examination, infection testing, cervical screening review, or imaging. Ask what result would change the plan, how to manage discomfort while waiting, and which symptoms mean you should return sooner.
