What should you know about post colon resection?

Short answer

After colon resection, recovery focuses on wound care, gradually restoring bowel function, movement, nutrition, and watching for signs of infection or blockage.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What recovery can mean

A resection removes a diseased part of the colon and joins the remaining ends when possible. Bowel habits may change while the intestine adapts: stool can be looser, more frequent, or difficult to regulate. Some people temporarily need a stoma, an opening on the abdomen that carries stool into a pouch. Your pathology result helps the team decide whether further cancer treatment or surveillance is appropriate.

What you can do at home

Keep the incision clean and follow the dressing instructions. Walk for short, regular periods and increase activity in the way your surgeon advises; avoid lifting until you are cleared. Drink according to your discharge plan, choose small meals, and add foods gradually. Record bowel movements, pain, temperature, and stoma output if you have one. Take prescribed medicines as directed and attend wound, pathology, and surgical follow-up. For background on the operation, see [Tumour Removal Surgery].

When to seek care

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, fever, worsening redness or drainage from the incision, or a sudden change in stoma colour or output. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, or chest pain. These symptoms need assessment because they can signal infection, bleeding, a bowel problem, or a clot.

Questions for your doctor

When can I shower, drive, work, and lift? Which bowel changes are expected for me? What should my stoma output look like? When will pathology be discussed, and who should I call outside clinic hours?

Questions people ask

Is a change in bowel habits normal after colon resection?

Bowel frequency and consistency can change while the remaining colon adapts, but persistent or worsening symptoms should be discussed with the surgical team.

When can activity increase after surgery?

Begin with gentle walking and follow the surgeon’s individual instructions for driving, work, exercise, and lifting.
