What should you know about possible cellulitis?

Cellulitis often begins when bacteria enter through a cut, cracked skin, insect bite, ulcer, or another break in the skin. The affected area may become increasingly red, hot, swollen, and painful over hours or days. Fever or chills can occur. The infection can involve an arm, leg, face, or another body area.

A clinician may check the borders, temperature, tenderness, wound, and general condition. Athlete's foot, eczema, an irritated bite, or a clot can resemble cellulitis, so redness alone cannot establish the cause. Cellulitis is a condition that presents with skin redness, skin swelling, and painful skin; these symptoms do not mean every red or swollen patch is cellulitis.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly for a new or spreading area of redness, warmth, swelling, or pain. Marking the edge with a pen and recording the time can help show whether it is expanding. Keep any break in the skin clean and covered, rest the affected limb, and elevate it when practical. Do not squeeze a boil or use leftover antibiotics. Mention diabetes, immune problems, recent surgery, or a foot infection because these details affect assessment.

Seek urgent care if redness is spreading quickly, pain is severe or out of proportion, fever is present, or you feel weak or confused. Emergency help is needed for trouble breathing, fainting, new confusion, or signs of sepsis. Swelling or infection near the eye also needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether the pattern fits cellulitis, whether a wound or fungal infection could be the entry point, how soon improvement should be checked, and which changes mean the treatment plan needs review.
