What the result can mean
Blood may come from haemorrhoids, a small tear, inflammation, polyps or another bowel problem. Ulcerative Colitis can also cause bleeding, particularly with urgency or diarrhoea. The test cannot show where the blood came from or whether it is continuing. Treat the result as a reason for assessment, not as a final diagnosis.
What to do next
Contact the service that arranged the test and ask about recommended follow-up. This may involve clinical review and a procedure to examine the bowel. Mention visible blood, changed bowel habit, abdominal pain, tiredness, weight change and family or personal bowel history. Keep the appointment even if bleeding has stopped, because the sample still needs an explanation.
When to seek care urgently
Seek urgent help for heavy or continuing rectal bleeding, black stools, severe abdominal pain, fainting, confusion or marked weakness. Prompt care is also needed with vomiting and abdominal swelling plus inability to pass stool or gas.
