What should you know about a portable pulse oximeter?

A reading can be affected by cold fingers, movement, nail products, poor circulation, or a loose fit. Warm your hand, sit quietly, keep the finger still, and wait for the display to settle. Consider the number alongside your breathing, colour, alertness, and general condition rather than treating one isolated result as a diagnosis.

Follow the device instructions and use the same finger and position when tracking readings. Record the time, reading, symptoms, and any oxygen treatment prescribed to you. Do not change medicines or start oxygen because of a home reading. If readings are repeatedly concerning or differ from how you feel, arrange a GP consultation.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, or difficulty staying awake. Seek advice promptly when a low or falling reading persists after you have checked the device and rested, especially if you have lung or heart disease.
