What should you know about a portable cryotherapy device?

Cryotherapy devices may use a focused spray or probe to freeze a skin lesion. The cold causes a local tissue reaction, followed by healing over time. Portable describes the device’s compact or movable format; it does not mean every lesion is suitable for freezing or that a home device can replace diagnosis.

A clinician first identifies the lesion and checks its borders, location, depth, skin type, sensation, and healing history. Cryotherapy may be used for selected benign lesions and other specific indications, but an uncertain, changing, bleeding, or non-healing spot needs assessment before removal.

Ask what the lesion is thought to be, why freezing is appropriate, and whether another method would give better control. Tell the clinician about poor circulation, reduced sensation, immune problems, diabetes, medicines that affect healing, and previous thick scars. Follow wound-care instructions: the area may blister or crust, and it should be kept clean without deliberately breaking the blister.

Contact the clinic if pain, redness, warmth, swelling, discharge, or colour change is worsening rather than settling. Seek prompt review for fever, spreading redness, severe pain, loss of sensation, or a wound that is not healing. Urgent care is appropriate for uncontrolled bleeding or swelling around the eye or airway.
