The device uses a mouthpiece to capture how much air you can exhale and how quickly you can move it. A clinician may use the pattern to investigate persistent cough, wheeze, or shortness of breath, monitor a lung condition, or compare readings at different visits. A portable unit can make testing convenient, but the result still depends on a good seal, full effort, correct posture, and careful coaching.

Follow the testing team's instructions about inhalers, smoking, food, and exercise. Sit tall, keep the mouthpiece sealed with your lips, and follow each prompt exactly. Expect repeated blows so the team can check that the attempts are usable. Stop and tell the technician if you become light-headed, develop chest discomfort, or cannot continue. Keep a note of symptoms and medicines taken around the appointment.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, fainting, blue or grey lips, new confusion, or heavy chest pressure. Arrange prompt medical review for breathing that is getting worse, coughing up blood, or a fever with breathlessness. A normal-feeling day or a single reassuring device reading does not replace care when symptoms are severe or changing.
