What should you know about polyhydramnios guidance?

Polyhydramnios means there is more amniotic fluid than expected, so clinicians assess possible causes and monitor pregnancy according to individual findings. Care may include ultrasound assessment, review of maternal health and a plan for follow-up rather than one identical schedule for everyone.

Amniotic fluid cushions the baby and allows movement. A higher volume may be linked with diabetes, problems affecting the baby's swallowing or urine production, more than one baby, or no clear cause. It can be mild or more pronounced. The finding does not by itself identify the cause or predict how labour will unfold.

Some people notice a rapidly enlarging abdomen, breathlessness, swelling or discomfort, while others have no symptoms and the finding appears on ultrasound. The scan can also assess growth, movement, position and other features.

Attend recommended appointments and scans, and tell your maternity team about diabetes, reduced movement, contractions, leaking fluid or increasing breathlessness. Your team may review glucose, examine growth and fluid, and adjust monitoring as pregnancy progresses. Ask where to go outside clinic hours and keep a written plan for the next scan or review. Do not restrict fluids or change medicines without medical advice.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for reduced or changed fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, sudden severe abdominal pain or marked breathlessness. A sudden gush of fluid or signs of labour need assessment because extra fluid can affect how the baby or cord moves when membranes rupture. Use local emergency services if you feel faint, severely unwell or cannot breathe comfortably.
