What should you know about polio virus contagious?

Short answer
Poliovirus is contagious and can spread from an infected person even when that person has few or no symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Contagious?
- Yes, including when symptoms are absent
- Common route
- Contamination from stool to mouth
- Key protection
- Vaccination and handwashing
How contagiousness works
The virus is shed in bowel movements and can move to another person through contaminated hands, food, water, or bathroom surfaces. Close contact may also allow spread through saliva or respiratory secretions. An infected person can pass the virus without knowing it, so a quiet household does not rule out exposure.
Contagiousness is not the same as severity. Many infections are mild, while a smaller group develop inflammation affecting nerves and movement. A new weakness is therefore more concerning than a simple question about whether someone has been near an infected person.
Limiting transmission
Wash hands with soap after using the toilet or helping with toileting, and before eating or preparing food. Do not share unwashed cups or utensils with someone who may be infected. Keep bathrooms clean and follow public-health advice if an exposure is confirmed. Check that children and adults in the household are appropriately vaccinated; details are available in [Childhood Immunisation](/treatments/preventive-care-and-vaccination/childhood-immunisation/).
When to seek urgent help
Contact a healthcare service promptly after possible exposure if fever is accompanied by weakness, an unsteady walk, difficulty swallowing, or reduced ability to move an arm or leg. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, choking, or rapidly worsening weakness. Keep the person away from food preparation while waiting for advice.
What to ask
Ask when the person may safely return to school, work, or group activities, whether close contacts require vaccination review, and which symptoms should trigger an emergency call. Share the timing and type of contact as clearly as possible.

Questions people ask
Can polio spread before symptoms appear?
Yes. A person may shed poliovirus before recognising illness or while feeling well.
Does being contagious mean someone will develop paralysis?
No. Transmission and severity are different issues; many infections do not cause paralysis, but new weakness needs urgent assessment.
