Polio immunization

Immunization may use an inactivated vaccine given by injection or an oral vaccine, depending on the programme and clinical advice. Protection is built through the recommended schedule, so a missed dose does not usually mean starting over; a healthcare professional can advise on catch-up. Vaccination reduces the risk of paralysis, but it does not treat weakness that has already started.

Keep a record of every dose and bring it to appointments. If a dose was missed, contact a clinic or public health service for a catch-up plan rather than guessing. Get emergency help for sudden limb weakness, inability to move normally, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or severe neck or back stiffness. After vaccination, seek immediate care for facial swelling, wheezing, collapse or rapidly worsening symptoms. Mild soreness or a short-lived fever can occur, but persistent or concerning symptoms deserve clinical advice.
