Short answer

Vitamin D may be relevant to overall health, but it is not a proven stand-alone cure for PMDD and should be discussed with a clinician.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How vitamin D fits in

PMDD is a recurring pattern of emotional and physical symptoms linked to sensitivity around the menstrual cycle. Vitamin D supports several body functions, but taking it does not automatically address the mood changes, irritability, anxiety, or physical symptoms of PMDD. Low vitamin D can have its own symptoms and may coexist with other problems, so a clinician may decide whether testing is appropriate rather than assuming PMDD is caused by a deficiency.

Use supplements thoughtfully

Describe your symptoms and cycle timing to a GP, and mention diet, sun exposure, previous vitamin results, kidney or liver conditions, and every medicine or supplement you use. Do not take high-dose vitamin D without professional advice; excessive intake can cause harm, and product strength varies. Keep a daily symptom diary for at least two cycles. Sleep routines, regular meals, suitable activity, and psychological support can complement care. If needed, a clinician may also discuss hormonal treatment such as the [Combined Pill](/treatments/contraception-and-family-planning/combined-pill/).

When support is needed

Make an appointment if symptoms repeatedly interfere with life or continue beyond the expected premenstrual window. Seek urgent help for suicidal thoughts, self-harm urges, or feeling unable to stay safe. Tell your care team if you are pregnant, recently gave birth, or breastfeeding; [Perinatal Mental Health Support](/treatments/medical-gynaecology/perinatal-mental-health-support/) can help with mood concerns in that context.

Questions for your appointment

Should I have vitamin D testing? What dose, if any, is suitable for me? Could my symptoms have another cause? How will we measure whether a treatment is helping across the cycle?

Questions people ask

Should everyone with PMDD take vitamin D?

No. A clinician can consider your health, diet, medicines, and whether testing is appropriate before recommending supplementation.

Can vitamin D replace PMDD treatment?

It should not be assumed to replace assessment or treatments that target recurring mood and physical symptoms.
