What should you know about PMDD and ADHD?

Short answer
PMDD and ADHD can overlap in attention, mood and impulse-control difficulties, so tracking symptoms across menstrual cycles helps clarify the pattern.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the patterns can overlap
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition involving ongoing difficulties such as attention regulation, organisation or impulsivity. PMDD causes marked emotional and physical symptoms during the premenstrual phase that improve after menstruation begins. Someone with both may notice that existing ADHD difficulties become harder to manage before a period.
Difficulty concentrating, irritability and feeling anxious can occur with either condition, but one symptom does not establish a diagnosis. The timing, severity, effect on daily life and symptoms outside the premenstrual phase all matter.
What to do next
Keep a daily record for at least two menstrual cycles, noting mood, attention, sleep, energy, impulsivity, bleeding dates, medicines and impact on work or relationships. Bring the record to a GP or mental health assessment. Mention any current ADHD treatment, contraception, antidepressants, pregnancy plans or substance use because these can affect the assessment.
Use practical supports during difficult days: written reminders, smaller tasks, regular meals, sleep routines and planned breaks. Avoid changing prescribed treatment without clinical advice.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if mood symptoms include thoughts of suicide, self-harm, harming someone else, losing touch with reality or being unable to stay safe. Contact a clinician promptly for rapidly worsening symptoms, severe agitation or major disruption to work, study, eating or sleep.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit ADHD, PMDD, both or another condition; how long to track the cycle; and whether medication, psychological support or cycle-related treatment could help. Ask how your current medicines should be reviewed.
