What should you know about PLDH malaria?

Parasite lactate dehydrogenase is produced by malaria parasites. A test that detects this marker may support a malaria diagnosis, but the result does not by itself describe how severe the illness is or identify every malaria species. Clinicians consider the result with symptoms, travel history and other testing. Fever, chills and muscle aches can occur with malaria, although symptoms vary and may overlap with other infections.

If malaria is suspected, seek medical assessment promptly and mention every country visited, dates of travel and any previous malaria. A blood test may be used to confirm infection and clarify the parasite. Take prescribed antimalarial treatment as directed and complete the plan unless the prescriber changes it. Before travel, a travel health consultation can assess prevention medicine and mosquito-bite precautions.

Get urgent medical help for a fever after travel to a malaria area, especially with confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, repeated vomiting or inability to drink. Malaria can worsen quickly, so do not rely on a home test or wait for chills to pass. Tell emergency staff about travel and any PLDH result.
