What should you know about plastic cast for fracture?

Most plastic casts are made from fibreglass or another synthetic material placed over padding. The clinician moulds the layers to the limb so movement is limited while the fracture is treated. Compared with plaster of Paris, a synthetic cast may feel lighter and can be more durable, but it is not automatically waterproof: the inner padding and any wound dressing still matter. A cast does not realign every fracture by itself. Some injuries first need a closed reduction, while others need surgery.

Keep the cast clean, follow instructions about walking or lifting, and elevate the limb when swelling is expected. Move exposed fingers or toes if advised, and check their colour and sensation. Contact the treating service urgently for increasing pain or pressure, new numbness or tingling, cold or discoloured fingers or toes, severe swelling, or inability to move exposed digits as instructed. Seek review if the cast becomes wet inside, cracks, loosens, causes rubbing, or develops an odour. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain requires emergency help.

Ask what cast material you have, whether it can get wet, how much weight or movement is allowed, and when imaging or review is planned. Ask how long support is expected and whether you will need exercises after removal.
