What should you know about plasma pen needles?

The word needle can be misleading in descriptions of plasma pens. Some devices have a pointed or replaceable tip, but the treatment mechanism is an electrical discharge across a small gap. The clinician places individual points over a chosen area, and each point can produce a tiny visible change in the surface. Redness, swelling, tenderness, crusting, and temporary pigment change can occur during repair. Microneedling uses sterile needles that enter the skin to a selected depth, so its risks and aftercare are different. Device design and operator technique matter more than a marketing label.

Ask to see the exact device and understand whether the tip is single-use, sterilised, or reusable under a documented infection-control process. Confirm who will perform the procedure and whether the setting is appropriate for the treatment area. Mention keloid scars, cold sores, active acne or eczema, pigment disorders, medicines, and previous reactions. Follow the aftercare plan closely: cleanse gently, avoid picking, limit heat and sun exposure, and use only recommended products until the skin surface has recovered.

Call the clinic if redness spreads, pain increases, discharge appears, or healing is not progressing. Urgent medical review is appropriate for severe swelling, eye symptoms, vision change, breathing difficulty, or extensive blistering. Do not use an unlabelled tip or share a device between people.

Ask what the tip does, how infection control is handled, what settings are planned, and how your skin type changes the risk of pigment alteration. Ask who to contact after hours and what signs would require an examination.
