What should you know about plaque type morphea?

Short answer
Plaque type morphea is a localised inflammatory skin condition that creates firm, discoloured patches as deeper skin becomes thickened.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
A plaque may begin as an area of pink, red, purple, or lighter skin and gradually feel harder or tighter than nearby skin. The centre can become ivory or pale while a coloured border remains active. It is different from systemic sclerosis, which can affect internal organs, although a clinician may check the wider picture. Plaque type usually affects a limited area, but its position and depth matter: a patch over a joint can restrict movement, and a deeper lesion can alter the contour of the skin. Hair may thin where the skin is involved.
What to do next
Arrange a dermatology assessment for a new firm, expanding, or changing patch. Examination helps distinguish morphea from eczema, fungal infection, scar tissue, and other causes of altered colour or texture. A biopsy may be considered when the diagnosis is uncertain. Treatment depends on activity, depth, site, and whether movement is affected; options can include prescribed topical medicines, phototherapy such as Narrowband UVB Phototherapy, or other anti-inflammatory treatment. Use gentle moisturiser, avoid rubbing the area, and protect exposed skin from ultraviolet light while it is being assessed.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical review if a patch is enlarging quickly, becomes painful, ulcerates, bleeds, or crosses a joint. Arrange earlier assessment for changes near the eyes, mouth, or scalp, or for numbness, weakness, or reduced movement. These features do not establish the diagnosis, but they can signal deeper or more active involvement that needs examination.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be plaque type morphea or another skin condition? Is the lesion active or inactive? How deep does it appear to be, and would a biopsy help? Which treatment suits its location? What changes should prompt an earlier appointment?

Questions people ask
Is plaque type morphea contagious?
No. Morphea is an inflammatory condition and does not spread through ordinary contact.
Can plaque type morphea affect movement?
It can when thickened skin lies over a joint or involves deeper tissue, so reduced flexibility should be assessed.
