What should you know about plantar itching?

The pattern provides useful clues. Dry, flaky skin may fit Asteatotic Eczema, while redness or irritation after footwear, soap, adhesive, or a new product can fit Contact Dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis may cause itch with dry inflamed patches. Thick scale can occur with Psoriasis, and a moist peeling rash may point toward a Skin Yeast Infection.

Scabies can cause intense itch and may affect household contacts, while Lichen Planus can produce itchy, distinct areas. These conditions can overlap in appearance, so scratching alone cannot identify the cause.

Use a gentle cleanser, lukewarm water, and a plain fragrance-free moisturiser. Keep feet dry, change damp socks, air footwear, and avoid scratching or applying several new treatments at once. If a product or shoe seems responsible, stop it and note whether the symptoms settle.

Do not share towels or footwear if infection is possible. A clinician can examine scale, cracks, blisters, distribution, and the nails before recommending an antifungal, anti-inflammatory, or other treatment.

Arrange assessment if itching persists, spreads, disrupts sleep, affects other household members, or comes with cracks, oozing, pain, swelling, or marked inflammation. Seek prompt help for rapidly worsening skin, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or signs of infection such as pus and increasing warmth.
