What should you know about placenta previa spectrum?

The placenta normally attaches higher in the uterus. A low-lying placenta is near the cervix; placenta previa is closer still and may cover the opening. Ultrasound shows its position and whether that relationship changes as the uterus grows. The label can be refined later in pregnancy, so one scan does not always settle the delivery plan.

Bleeding can occur when the lower uterus or cervix changes. It may be bright red and may happen without pain, but symptoms vary. A low placenta can also affect how safely the baby can pass through the birth canal.

Keep the follow-up scans your maternity team recommends and ask what the placental edge and cervix relationship shows. Until you receive individual advice, avoid inserting anything into the vagina and check before sex or strenuous activity, because your restrictions depend on bleeding history and scan findings. Keep your maternity unit number available and plan how you would reach care quickly.

If the placenta remains over the cervix or bleeding makes labour unsafe, your team may discuss a planned Caesarean Section. A Growth Scan may be suggested when clinicians want to check fetal growth alongside placental position.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for any vaginal bleeding, even if it is light, painless or stops. Call emergency services for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe weakness, severe abdominal pain, regular contractions or reduced fetal movement. Do not drive yourself if you feel unwell. Use a pad to observe bleeding rather than inserting a tampon, and tell staff about the colour, amount and timing.

Ask: Is the placenta low-lying or covering the cervix? When will its position be checked again? What activity or sex restrictions apply to me? Which bleeding symptoms require immediate assessment?
