Placenta accreta pathology: how reports are understood

How the structures involved in Placenta Accreta differ from normal

Short answer

A placenta accreta pathology report examines how deeply placental tissue attached to or grew into the uterine wall and surrounding tissues.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pathology
It studies tissue collected during delivery or surgery.
Interpretation
The report is combined with imaging and operative findings.

What the report may describe

A pathologist examines tissue removed during delivery or surgery. The report may describe whether placental villi are attached directly to the uterine muscle, extend into that muscle, or pass through the uterine wall. It may also mention the membranes, the edge of the placenta, the cervix, or tissue near the bladder if samples were taken. Words such as accreta, increta, and percreta describe depth, while terms about haemorrhage or inflammation describe associated findings. The report is interpreted alongside scans, operative notes, symptoms, and recovery; it is not a stand-alone prediction of future health.

How to use the result

Ask your obstetrician to translate the report into plain language and explain whether it confirms the suspected diagnosis. Find out whether any tissue remains, whether additional monitoring is needed, and what the result means for future pregnancy planning. If surgery involved a hysterectomy, ask how the final findings affect your recovery and follow-up. Keep a copy of the report with your maternity records and tell future clinicians about the diagnosis.

Symptoms that should not wait

After delivery or surgery, contact your care team urgently for increasing bleeding, severe pain, fever, chills, wound redness, foul-smelling discharge, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting. In pregnancy, vaginal bleeding, painful contractions, leaking fluid, or reduced fetal movement also requires prompt maternity assessment. A pathology result does not make new symptoms safe to ignore.

Questions about your report

Ask which depth of attachment was confirmed, whether the margins or nearby organs were examined, whether the report changes your follow-up, and who should review it before another pregnancy. Ask which recovery symptoms are expected and which require urgent contact.

Questions people ask

Can pathology diagnose placenta accreta before birth?

Pathology requires tissue examination, so it generally confirms the diagnosis after delivery or surgery rather than during pregnancy.

What if the report is difficult to understand?

Ask the obstetrician or pathologist to explain unfamiliar terms and how the findings relate to your treatment.
