Malassezia yeast is part of the usual skin community. Heat, humidity, sweating, oily skin, and some changes in the skin environment can encourage it to multiply. This is an overgrowth of an organism already present, not a sign that someone is unclean. The condition is not usually passed between people through hugging, sharing a room, or touching. Patches may be lighter, darker, pink, or tan and often have fine scale on the trunk, neck, shoulders, or face. The colour change reflects altered pigment activity in the affected skin.

A clinician can confirm the pattern and select a topical antifungal treatment, a medicated shampoo treatment, or, for selected cases, oral antifungal treatment. Follow the directions and do not share prescribed products. Breathable clothing, changing out of damp clothes, gentle washing, and avoiding heavy oily products may reduce conditions that encourage recurrence. Treatment can stop the overgrowth while the patches remain visible for a while because pigment normalises gradually.

Seek an assessment if the rash is painful, very inflamed, rapidly spreading, or unlike previous episodes. Arrange review when treatment does not help, when episodes return often, or when smooth colour loss appears without scale.
