Pink discharge after menopause: what to know

After menopause, falling oestrogen can make vaginal and cervical tissues thinner and more easily irritated. Dryness, infection, a polyp, or pelvic organ prolapse may cause blood-tinged discharge. Less commonly, bleeding can signal a womb or cervical problem. Pink fluid cannot identify the cause by its colour, and it should not be assumed to be a returning period.

Arrange a medical appointment and note when the discharge began, how much appeared, its colour, any odour, and whether it followed sex or examination. Tell the clinician about medicines, hormone therapy, pelvic symptoms, and prior cervical screening. Do not insert products or douche before assessment, because these can irritate tissue and make symptoms harder to interpret.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, dizziness, fainting, fever, or feeling very unwell. Prompt assessment is also needed if discharge keeps returning, becomes red, develops an unpleasant smell, or occurs with pelvic pressure, a vaginal bulge, or unexplained weight change.

Ask whether you need an examination, swabs, cervical screening, or imaging, and whether vaginal dryness or prolapse could explain the irritation. Ask how quickly results will be available and which symptoms should prompt earlier review.
