What should you know about pilaris rash?

Keratin can collect around hair follicles and create a sandpaper-like texture. The bumps may be skin-coloured, pink, or red, and they are often more noticeable when the skin is dry. Mild itching can occur, but marked pain, warmth, pus, or rapidly spreading redness points toward another process. A clinician may compare the pattern with conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Heat Rash, Psoriasis, Ringworm, or Scabies.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and apply a plain moisturiser soon after bathing. Avoid scrubbing, picking, and very hot water, which can increase irritation. Products containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may smooth roughness, but introduce one at a time and stop if burning or a worsening rash develops. Give a new routine several weeks before judging its effect.

Arrange a dermatology review if the rash is spreading, painful, infected-looking, intensely itchy, or not settling with gentle care. Seek urgent help for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, or a rash involving the eyes or mouth.
